Bio-ijzer wordt als ijzer-, ascorbinezuur- en foliumzuursupplement (= nutriënt) gebruikt.

IJzer is een essentieel bestanddeel van hemoglobine en van myoglobine. IJzer neemt deel aan de werking van verschillende ademhalingsenzymes die onontbeerlijk zijn voor de neurotranmitters (dopamine, serotonine, noradrenaline).

Ascorbinezuur bevordert de ijzeropname. Foliumzuur is een vitamine uit de B-groep die noodzakelijk is bij de celdeling.
